Daphne du Maurier was born in London in 1907 and educated at home and in Paris. She lived most of her life in her beloved Cornwall, the setting for many of her novels including her most renowned piece of writing, Rebecca.

Du Maurier was married to Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick "Boy" Browning, and was the mother of two daughters and a son. She died in Cornwall in 1989.
