George Orwell was born Eric Blair in India in 1903. He led an extremely eventful life and travelled widely. His formative years were spent in England, and after leaving Eton College in 1921 he returned to India to join the Imperial Police. By 1927 he was back in London, and shortly afterwards he moved to Paris. His experience of extreme poverty in these two capitals gave rise to his classic autobiographical book, Down and Out in Paris and London.
Orwell also spent time in Spain, fighting in the Civil War on the side of the Republicans. He was shot in the neck in 1937 and travelled back to England soon afterwards. Due to his poor health, Orwell was unable to fight in World War II. Instead, he joined the home guard, which allowed him to continue writing and to produce the novel Animal Farm.
After his wife’s death in 1945, Orwell spent some time living in a remote farmhouse on the island of Jura, and it was during this time that he began work on Nineteen Eighty-Four. Like most of Orwell’s writing, ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ is characterised by the strong anti-totalitarian sentiments it conveys.
Orwell died in 1950, leaving behind a substantial literary and cultural legacy. Many phrases that are now fully integrated into the English vocabulary originated in his work – for example ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Room 101.’ He remains one of the most discussed authors of all time.
