John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was Professor of Anglo-Saxon at University of Oxford, but he is probably best known for his novel The Hobbit (1937) and his trilogy The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), all of which are set in a pre-historic era in an invented version of the world which he called by the Middle English name of Middle-earth.

In 1918 Tolkien began writing The Children of Hurin, but never finished it. It took his son Christopher Tolkien almost thirty years to piece the manuscript together and it was finally published in 2007.

His grandson Simon Tolkien is also a published writer.
