Richard Yates was born in 1926 in New York. His father was an electric light salesman and his mother was an aspiring sculptress. Yates’s first novel, Revolutionary Road(1961) was nominated, alongside Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 and J.D Salinger’s Franny and Zooey for the National Book Award. Although Yates initially enjoyed critical acclaim, over the following decades his work was neglected and Yates sank into alcoholism. By his death in 1992, all his books were out of print. However, recently enthusiasm for his work has been resurrected. This is in part down to his work being championed by a group of authors which including Nick Hornby, Kate Atkinson, David Hare and Kurt Vonnegut.
