Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born in 1772 in a small village, in Devon, England. He was schooled in London and then went to Cambridge University. Coleridge is best known as a poet of the Romantic movement and author of the poems The Rime of the ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan and Christabel, but he also received recognition as a public lecturer and philosopher. In 1800 Coleridge moved with his family to the Lake District where he became close friends with the poet William Wordsworth. Coleridge’s life began to be blighted by his increasing use of Opium and spent much of his later years in London. He died in July 1834 and is buried in Highgate Cemetery, London.
