Totally addictive read, and fast with it. This has to be the best Val McDermid book I've read so far. The only gripe is the inconclusive ending, though since this is 2nd in a series, maybe not.

This book always gives me the wibblys. But I can't stop re-reading it on a fairly regular basis :) Young teenage girls on the cusp of becoming women are disappearing and the new Crime Bureau, headed up by Dr Tony Hill, is using their case files to practise and hone their psychological profiling skills. The star of the class spots the link and against Tony's advice follows up the leads. Soon the whole fledgling team has a fresh body on their hands and are themselves under suspicion of murder. Isn't it lucky Tony knows a police officer who can help them out? A worthy successor to 'The Mermaids Singing'. And, by this time, Robson Green made a decent TV version of Tony.

I was certainly hooked until the end...but was left unsatisfied by the ending. Is there a sequal? That might explain it. Tony is a great lead character, but the stupidly named Jacko didn't really cut it for me as the murderer. I just kept imagining him as Richard Madley.

I loved this book from page 1 to 533. I could not put it down. Good psychological thriller.

Meet Dr Anthony Valentine Hill, a brilliant PhD clinical psychologist, but slightly awkward in social settings.
Add a career driven Carol Jordan, at the Bradfield homicide. Let them meet while working together in chasing down one of the worst serial killers in UK history - a killer that seems to be targeting homosexual men, and draws a perverted pleasure in torturing them, medieval style.
It's a race against the clock and a battle of two very sharp brains that have to work together with someone completely different then what they are used to.
