This is competently done, but it didn't do much for me. The writing was quite high-end descriptively, but I could feel my eyes glazing. It's a very small, domestic story (Aloma feels neglected, Orren feels unsupported) which didn't inspire me, and I didn't feel like I really got to know any of the characters enough to care about their rather mundane issues.

This novel is wonderfully written about the trial and hardships that a couple faces on a tobacco farm during a drought. The difficulties are even hard for they aren't married during a time when it was taboo to live with someone and not be married to them. You feel all the frustration and aggravation that the woman feels in the book. The landscape is described perfectly and you can actually picture the earth that is some dry it has begun to crack. This a moving story of a woman and her inner struggles with herself. This book is a must read.

Aloma moves to an farm to live with Orren but she is unprepared for the lack of culture and the loneliness. She soon tires of the mundane day to day chores and yearns to play the piano again.

Orren, still grieving for his family, and struggling against the odds to keep the farm going, is largely unsympathetic to her feelings.

The situation is made worse by the stigma attached to their living arrangements and the strain of trying to keep it secret.

Set on a drought ridden tobacco farm deep in the backwoods, this is a gritty novel with beautifully descriptive prose evocative of the despair of the situation.

This is a beautiful novel; set in the low mountain hills of the American west on a tobacco farm, everything about this book reflects - and is affected by - the landscape. The writing is stunning and the pace of the story is so evocative of the slow, hard lives the main characters lead. The internal and external toils of both characters are so beautifully expressed, it is quite extraordinary how affected one feels. This is such an evocative book.
The relationship between men and women, the hard lives we lead and the distances we put between ourselves, each other, and where we want to be…ALL THE LIVING is a magnificent novel
