I hate de Bernieres and any other author who is so taken with their own talents that they can't resist embellishing page after page with a clever little flourish or two. One or two in a book is enough for my tastes.

I remember reading this ages ago. I liked how the story is told through different threads and perspectives, and the characters followed in each of the threads are well drawn and easy to believe in. Thought the ending was a bit rubbish though.
