It is because of this book that i have my "hundred page rule". If i think i do not like a book, I always read to page one hundred to give it a fair chance before giving up. The first pages of this novel are densely packed with french politics of the era, which, whilst they do provide useful background for a modern reader, are tedious and difficult to plow through. Once the story starts in earnest though, it is a fantastic, fast paced read

A classic piece of literature by Dumas. It has all the elements of a great novel. Intrigue, betrayal, revenge, love and love lost, redemption, moral ambiguity, ambiance, treasure... In short, brilliant! It is a tale that grasps the reader and transports them into the authors world; that includes them as a participant in the story. You can almost "feel" the cold, jagged stone walls of the Chateau de If and the sensation of almost drowning in the bitter cold and dark tumultuous waves outside the prison as a cannonball drags you to the watery depths. Furthermore, Dumas' work reminds me of fantasies that I have had in re isolating myself away for years (possibly in prison) where I could focus solely on honing all my skills and knowledge to be the consummate renaissance man. And yet at the same time Dante is the proverbial everyman. I reread this book once every two years or so and I would highly recommend it for anyone who has never had the truly breathtaking opportunity to experience its magic.

What a great book and is well-entitled to it's "classic" status. Revenge, power, redemption, love, hate and the whole world as his stage. Not to be missed if you want to expand your grasp of literature.

Even the criticisms of 18th C Italian food are good.

A favorite in high school, when revenge fantasies seem especially appealing.

This is a novel for the ages and for all ages. Betrayal and intrigue plays at the very heart. The Count of Monte Cristo refers to a man who both never existed and yet comes into existence of his own will. It's the battle of man-against-man and man-against-himself.

The original French is beautifully written and the story flows so well that one forgets that this is comparable of what Stephen King would be if he lived in Dumas' time. This is pop fiction, to be sure, but it's one that manages to survive the ages on the merits of the story and writing alone.
