Beautiful, clever, rich - and single - Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, "Emma" is often seen as Jane Austen's most flawless work.

I enjoyed Emma as the heroine filled the novel with her vivacious nature and kept the story interesting and lively all the way through. Also, I really liked the character of Emma despite her faults as she came across as a real person.

Not as done to death as P and P, this is my favourite Austen - even though Emma herself is at times difficult to like.

I put off reading this classic for many years, and only read it a few years ago just to say that I had. It was better than I'd hoped, but I hadn't hoped for much. I think you either love Jane Austen or you don't.

Cecilia, or Memoirs of an Heiress

Cecilia, or Memoirs of an Heiress by Peter Sabor, Fanny Burney, Margaret Doody

Average rating:
First published in 1782, this novel interweaves comedy, humanity and social analysis. In its satirical picture of the heroine's dismaying encounter with the gilded fashionable world, while also enjoying the attractions of an unusual love story, it caused controversy in its time. Cecilia is an "heiress" who can keep...
