Fun book with a huge scope. From Kings most creative period.

Sorry, 900 pages in and I'm giving up. Only 400 to go but I can't take it any more. Too long, unremittingly bleak, uninvolving characters. The world's reaction to Swine Flu shows the many flaws in King's scenario for a plague. One question for the fans: what about some Texas/Aussie farmer who just closes his vast borders and lets no one in to infect him or his family? Obvious but not mentioned.
Some of King's homespun wisecracks hit the spot but much of his prose comes across as macho posturing.
A better book was there -- the editors just needed to take all that good versus evil mumbo-jumbo out and it was down to a bitesize 500 pages.

King at his best. Plot, characters, locations and side-stories are all top level. You find ways to empathise with both the heroes and villains in this novel in a way that only King can manage. His use of recurring themes and building the individual traits of each character is extraordinary. If it wasn't such a long book, I would definitely read again.

One of my favorites that I read every few years. The quintessential apocalypse book, in my opinion. King doesn't get enough credit for being a good writer because he's so popular.

Ok lets be up front this is a big book and it is enthralling so expect lots of long reading sessions. If you are going to commit to reading it then do the job properly and get the full uncut version. It adds an extra couple of hundred pages, but includes some sub plots completely removed from the original that I think make the story a lot better.

This is an epic journey, a struggle of good vs evil with a few shades of gray thrown in for good measure. Part of the reason the book is so long is that it allows King to really develop the characters, you really feel like you have taken the journey with them at the end, you almost feel with them as each twist and turn unravel. OK some of the plot is a bit predictable, but there is always a catch or surprise lurking around the corner.

This is a fantastic book for anyone looking at committing to a good long read (great for long haul flights or a holiday). Don't try and read it in short bursts, it will take forever and not do the book justice. Like any good book relationship though, immerse yourself in it and commit to it and you will enjoy the rewards.

Just don't expect every other Stephen King book to be the same, they range from enthralling (Christine) to downright awful (Insomniac), and how he finished off the gunslinger series was a tragedy, but that for another review.

Enjoy

Not his scariest or most moving novel in my opinion but still a very good read, much better than his later stuff like Cell or Rose Madder.Exciting with a big finish even if if a little bit on the long side.

I wish there were more stars to click so this book could be rated beyond the 5 available. Numerous readings of this book have not dulled it one bit for me.

Terrific narrative, nothing really horror-like, but a great story. Stephen King's style is a bit... over the top, especially regarding characters' inner monologues, but this is epic.
