An astonishingly rich re-creation of the land of Oz, this book retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all. Taking readers past the yellow brick road and into a phantasmagoric world rich with imagination and allegory, Gregory Maguire just might change the reputation of one of the most sinister characters in literature.

Brilliant idea just doesn't come off in my opinion. The book is divided into several parts, the plot jumping 3-10 years at the end of each, frustrating any current storyline. So it eventually comes together, but in a sad, wasted-life manner.

I found this book funny for the most part. It was interesting to see what Elphaba was like before becoming the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz.

Had high expectations from this book after so many people were raving about it, have to say i was quite disappointed, bored me silly. Not a lot happens that i found interesting, gets a little better in the second half, but the first half drags on so much.
