I raced through the book, and really enjoyed it. However, I don't like the unfinished parts of the plot - I like my novels to end fully resolved.

Steff Penney amazingly captures and vividly describes the frozen northern Canadian wilderness considering she's never set foot there. I don't usually read murder-mysteries. My attraction to this one was mainly because she won a first novel award with it and I worked and lived in a similar Canadian setting for 6 years. To be honest and, with all due respect to Ms Penney, I really only identified with the characters in the novel in the minutiae of their day to day 'outpost' lives and their stoicism in a cruel climate. Worth a read though.

The Tenderness of Wolves, although perhaps inappropriately named (due to the lack of the presence of wolves for the majority), was a a challenging, yet interesting novel, and a world apart from my normal read.
Set in Canada in 1867 and narrated by a whole host of different characters through means of being written rather episodically, it paints a larger picture of isolated life in 19th century Canada and shows more vividly the effects of one crime on an entire community and it's varying characters.
Although a compelling story, a lot of sub-plots are left at lose ends and can sometimes seem a little off the point.
Overall though, an entertaining read.

I read this book on a hot Greek beach which was totally the opposite of the book's theme.
The plot was interesting but I thought it actually took second place to the atmosphere and scenery of the novel which was wonderfully written and I found myself swept into the world that Penney created.

I seem to be the dissident voice. Too many characters, major ones were not as detailed as some of the minor characters. The tension build up was ruined within the space of a sentence or two for example, when Mrs Ross witness two men turn up at a murder victim’s house – so much scope yet we find out straight away who they are, leaving us only with the why were they there. I didn’t feel the historical side it seemed modern - would there really have been a rugby match? The shift into different narratives was not clearly enough divided. Parts were good but beyond thatit needed a last revision. I was incredibly disappointed.

An intriguing murder mystery set in Canada during the pioneer days, dominated by the fur trade. Different narrative intersperse the structure, each with a different perspective which keeps the reader hooked towards the bittersweet conclusion.
