This is seriously my new favorite fantasy book yet. It doesn't top Harry Potter, but I'm not holding my breath for any book to do that soon. Really, this is a great adventure and story of newly found friends in distressing circumstances, with that awesome effect of making a strong character within the novel, and not making him a complete whiner until he accomplishes it is what he needs to. John Lenahan is PRO!

I think this book had the perfect balance of fantasy and reality. The comments, feelings, and references made by the main character were things I would be thinking if I was in there situation. Looking forward to Shadowmagic 2.

While this compelling book hints at influences, Mr. Lenahan speaks in a wholly original, refreshing voice. He share secrets with the reader in a warm tone, and brings the story along like a rollicking horse-drawn wagon-ride down an old Irish dirt road. A superb page-turner, and just the right combination of the ancient and modern worlds for today's fantasy reader.

One of the best and most original books I've come across in years. Set in faerie land, and uses characters from traditional folklore, but with a 21st century modern twist. Well, imagine *you* suddenly found out your relatives were from fairy stories and were out to get you!

I was surprised at how compelling this book is - written by a natural storyteller, it appeals to young and old alike. Anyone with a feel for mystery and magic will enjoy the tale, written in an easy-to-read style, but it is in fact more complex and deep than you at first think. The author is Irish American, and his humour is both child-friendly and quick. Being transported into new lands is a refreshingly different experience and is yet anchored in the kind of mythology that adults feel at ease with. John has done his homework and I learnt a lot as well as enjoyed a fast-paced, innovative novel. A good read.

I listened to John Lenahan read this book and LOVED it! The story is filled with imagination and humor. Great book for young adults and all the rest of us. Because I enjoyed the story so much and was crestfallen when it ended, I actually emailed Mr. Lenahan to beg and plead for him to write another one. Blessedly, he has.

Excellent - family friendly (not too young - maybe 9 and up?) and great fun. Buy the book, but also check out the brilliant podcast reading by the author

This is a very engaging, humorous fairy tale - assuming you like your fairies on the dangerous side with swords and stick-fighting. Highly recommended for all ages, a wonderfully family-safe read. (Or listen, if you like audiobooks. The author reads it extremely well.)
