I am surprised there is no forum for her. Am I doing this wrong? She is one of the best authors writing now. She is the kind of author that make you collect every one of her books.

I need ideas for my Dad's Christmas present this year. He likes books, but not fiction, I've NEVER seen my Dad read fiction, and I've asked him if he'd read a fiction book if I got it for him and he said no. Helpful. So I need ideas for non-fiction books. The kinds of things he's read and enjoyed in the past is 'Mustn't Grumble' by Terry Wogan, a couple of Richard Branson's books, Derran Brown's 'Tricks of the mind', Jeremy Clarkson's books (all but the new one, and I don't know how to stop him buying that). I think he would be interested in things to do with Science, he loves the Japanese and their martial arts, and he enjoys fishing (no idea why). Any non-fictional ideas? Cheers!

The Booker Prize shortlist is to be announced in September; an annual event that never fails to generate controversy. It seems that public opinion is invariably divided as to what exactly makes an author deserving of this most sought-after of British literary accolades. What you think? Is literary merit just too subjective to be quantified through these kinds of awards? Awards like the Booker may tout themselves as the be-all-and-end-all in literary standards, but do they pander to only a very elite section of readers? Or do you trust awards to bring great talents to your attention and reward deserving writers? Share your views in this forum.

To mark Halloween, we're running a poll to find the greatest horror/paranormal book ever. Nominate your favourite book with a scary or paranormal theme in this forum, and tell us why you've chosen it. Your nominations can be old or new, a classic ghost story or something a bit different. From Mary Shelley to Laurell K. Hamilton to Darren Shan, we want to hear your top spine-chilling reads!
On the 23rd October we will create a poll on the NEWS page using all your nominations, and members can then vote for the best scary book of all time. The result will be announced on the 29th October!

What do you make of this year's Booker Prize shortlist? The nominated authors are Sarah Waters, Hilary Mantel, J. M. Coetzee, Adam Foulds, Simon Mawer and A. S. Byatt. Who have you read? Who have you not even heard of? Is there anyone in particular who should win (or lose)? Discuss it here.

Books can surprise you. A place to talk about strange reads that are quirky, avant garde or just plain weird.
