Attached Book: Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Every year sees a new batch of uber-bestsellers, hyped up beyond all comprehension, bestowed with praise and prizes and positive attention in all other possible forms. Often, it all turns out to be a bit of a case of emperor's new clothes, and some of these books (the Da Vinci Code?) can be really quite disappointing once you get your teeth into them. Since we've already got an Overrated Books group to deal with those, I wanted to make a group for hyper-popular fiction that actually deserves to be popular. I've attached Life of Pi as it's one of the most heavily-publicised novels of the past decade, but also a novel I found very enjoyable and highly original.

I've just finished 'The Good Thief' and it is a worthwhile read.

I have Life of Pi on my to be read pile, and White Tiger, looking forward to them both, I would also recommend The Book Thief as a very hyped book that lived up to the claims and made for wonderful reading.

How about The Book Thief. I see the name going about and have read the blurb but not sure it's quite my thing.

Going by your screen name, I would have thought the crazy fantasy world of Life of Pi would be right up your street!!

I read Life of Pi and was very disappointed. It would be great if you were into crazy fantasy worlds butit just annoyed me. Haven't read House at Riverton but it's on my list. Would be interested to hear if anyone's read White Tiger as it's tempting me but I haven't got it yet.

Ah, I really love books with a surreal element, which probably explains why I liked Life of Pi.

Loads of people have recommended White Tiger to me and I'll probably end up reading it but nothing anyone's said about it has really caught my interest yet. I've not read the House at Riverton - I'll need to add it to my to-read list!

I have yet to read 'Life of Pi', but will add it to my book list.
I really enjoyed 'The House at Riverton', and thought it deserved all of the praise it got. Lisa x
