The Kingdom under the Sea and other stories by Joan Aiken was one of my favourites as a 10 year old. The devilish side of me also liked the Jan Pienowski illustrations (terrified my younger sister). The best was Baba Yaga's daughter and The Sun-God's castle. Scary, fairytales with a twist.
One of the lovely things about being a book-loving parent, you can remember all your childhood faves and introduce your babes to them.
I bought a copy for my children (although obviously way too young a the moment). I might have to pull it down off the bookshelf and indulge my inner child with a quick read.
Thanks to Lucy Mangan in the Guardian newspaper who recently finished a weekly digest of her childhood faves. Very insightful and a lot of mine were on the list too!

Hey there:

One of the bestselling children's books of all time, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is having its 40th birthday and its author Eric Carle is having his 80th birthday this year. I can remember the librarian in my elementary school reading this to our kindergarten class. This was also one of the first books I checked out all by myself with my very first library card.

So for all those lucky folks that live with in visiting distance of ...

Someone posted about Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy in one of the forums yesterday and it reminded me of its existence, which I'd completely forgotten. I loved this book as a child (and would probably still love it a bit now, if I could actually locate my copy of it...)

Hi,
I can clearly remember 'The Fib and Other Stories' by George Layton from my childhood. I was in infant school aged about 6 or 7, and once a week our teacher Mrs Hill would ask us to pack away our things an hour earlier and all come and sit down at the back of the class. She would then take out her dog eared copy of 'The Fib' and read us all one of the stories inside. My favourite was always 'the balaclava boys'. If you have young children then I cannot recomend this book highly enough. That book will always remind me of the simple times of childhood; when my biggest concern was... 'I wonder what sweets mom will bring me, when she picks me up after school'.

Hi Dehavilland, you might be able to help me... as a lover of horsey books, did you ever read a book in a series about a girl named Ashley who lived on a farm? It was an American series and I've been trying to think of the name but it's bolted on me! Any ideas?

As a child I was horse mad and these were my favourite 'horsey' books. I first read them at about the age of seven ,but reread them many times. I kept on discovering new aspects of the stories as I became older and recognised what was being writen about. For instance in the third book, 'Green green grass of Wyoming', Ken's mother,Nell, suffers a breakdown caused by post-natal depression. Not something I would have recognised as a seven year old.
