I agree that the writing is wonderful and the magical realism elements are subtle and inspired, as always with Garcia Marquez. However, I must admit to being slightly disappointed as I expected it to be as good as One Hundred Years of Solitude and it wasn't even nearly. My main issue, as I've said below, was the characters. I didn't particularly care for any of them, and the protagonist was thoroughly unlikeable, completely lacking in even ONE quality that might endear him to me.

I think the writing is beautiful and a great example of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's work. I do feel the story was a bit lacking and it takes a strong will to battle through the middle section to get to the resolution!

Hi emzbez, good to know your managed to push on to the end! I actually agree with you, sort of. I wasn't bored, but I did find myself wishing the book would end as I found the main character completely reprehensible. He is an utter misogynist who uses women only for sex, and yet he places the unattainable Fermina on a pedestal, seemingly for absolutely no reason other than that he has never succeeded in sleeping with her. I didn't find his obsession romantic, only disturbing and slightly creepy.

At last I finished it. I can't say I really enjoyed it and I don't think I will be reading any more of his books. Romantic yes but it just I was so bored. Lets hope we have some thing light hearted and fun for December!

What a lovely book! I was swept up in the romance of it all. I particularly like it because it shows us (older readers!) that there is hope for romance in our later lives. An excellent book all round.

I have just started reading it, but am struggling as the chapters are so long. I think it might take me a while to get through it.

Great choice. A wonderful author + this will be a great excuse to reread one of my favourite books!

Read it years ago-wonderfully poetic, profoundly sad, a classic...

Welcome to the November Book of the Month event, everyone! How many of you have already read this book, or anything else by Garcia Marquez? I've read 'One Hundred Years of Solitude', and loved it, but this will be my first reading of 'Love in the Time of Cholera'. I'm looking forward to finding out what everyone thinks of it.
